In recent years since the graveyard has been maintained on a regular basis, the number of people visiting and taking an interest in its history has grown considerably. We have personally met people from The US, Canada, UK, New Zealand, and France as well as people from various other counties in Ireland that have both enquired about burial plots of their ancestors and also complimented on the general condition of the graveyard.

OUR VISION

Items of work to accomplish in 2017:

Going forward, to reduce the maintenance work in the graveyard we hope to secure funding to accomplish the following:

  • To lay down weed barrier and limestone chippings at the west end of the graveyard and inside the chapel ruins where the ground is very uneven underfoot and grass is difficult to keep under control. This area would cover approximately 600square metres and will further enhance the appearance of the graveyard.

  • To create a reflective area in the north east corner of the graveyard. This would involve clearing some debris and cutting back some overgrown ivy, laying weed barrier and limestone chippings and installing a seat. Approximate area is 25 square metres.

  • The recent refurbishment of the Huggard tomb which was commissioned by the Clifford family of the Kerries, Tralee is a testament and a prime example of what can be achieved in restoring a tomb as close to its original state as possible. There are a number of other tombs within the graveyard where this kind of restoration could be applied. It could be a specific project to undertake over a certain time frame by persons qualified in this type of work.

The general maintenance work, which takes up a lot of man hours is done solely on a voluntary basis, however we are always appreciative of any assistance with individual and specific projects.

WHAT WE DO

We have had many favourable meetings with various Kerry County Council representatives and we have found them to be very accommodating. They have set out guidelines concerning the upkeep of the graveyard which we have adhered to, and have been very pleased with their response and co-operation.
